2021 release, bottle number 4833.
I was planning on waiting to open this for a special occasion, but it turns out that the special occasion was being bored on a Saturday afternoon with no Oklahoma football and stuck at home with 3 year-old son napping. While I like the Balmorhea quite a bit, it doesn't make me want to keep diving in for more like my favorite whiskies do. So along with the steep price, I was half-expecting to be disappointed in this release.
Wow! Wow! Wow! Turns out this is everything it's cracked up to be. The nose, the palate, the finish are all over the top. While the Balmo noses like a sticky maple sawmill, this has a similar element of sawdust, with maple syrup, brown sugar, and cedar, but there is also a reminiscence of some other spirit like cognac. This is less viscous than the Balmo, but that's relative, because the Balmo is like motor oil. Whereas the Balmo leans heavily on the wood notes, this seems to be much more balanced. The wood and dark brown sugar notes play in harmony with doughy sweet bread and again well-aged Brandy. As with my favorite whiskies, this makes me want to keep going back for more, although the proof and price keep me from going too fast. This is really special whiskey that will be well-enjoyed. Highly recommend if you can find it.

@Ctrexman picked up 2 of the 2020 release? We may have to trade samples. Curious how this year's compares to other years.
@Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington @PBMichiganWolverine left a dent in the wallet, but not disappointed. Would think twice at 280 though.
@pkingmartin he's a sweet kid, but definitely sometimes
@ctbeck11 it feels like an initiation
Nice write up, I still have a2020 bottle in reserve but when I get a chance at a 2021 I will grab it. They did roll this out several weeks back with a drive through purchase opportunity at the distillery that I was considering going to
Absolute bargain on the price. At $280 locally I’m gonna have to pass but those notes make me question my will.
Nice find at this price! Yeah, it’s pricey —but so damn good
Great review! Congrats on finding this for under $200 and glad it didn’t disappoint! Also, a sleeping 3 year old seems a worthy occasion for a special pour to me.
Great review. Welcome to the Cowboy club!
