Auchroisk "This is Like Spectacular" Apollo 9, The Whisky Barrel Exclusive

Was really curious about trying this one…and sadly, I purchased it because I’m a huge fan of the Apollo missions. I’ve never had Auchroisk before, so really had no expectations.
This is completely dominated by the PX cask. It’s like licking toast slathered in PX. Personally, I don’t see the point when a spirit is fully dominated by the cask. I feel there needs to be a better sense of balance. This is sticky sweet, heavy handed taken to the max. It’s like having those Cinnabons you find in malls. Overloaded with sweetness to such extent that you can’t taste the cinnamon.
Hard pass….for me personally at least.

@Richard-ModernDrinking My bottle just arrived and it’s incredible!!! Definitely worth the price and I bet it’s going to improve with some air.
@Richard-ModernDrinking @PBMichiganWolverine Oh that’s great to hear that there are positive reviews on it. It’s a 30 year single cask aged in ex-bourbon with an Artemis space theme.
@PBMichiganWolverine It’s a 30 — not the same series but a different space-themed one from TWB.
@Richard-ModernDrinking @pkingmartin you mean the Bunna 10, not 30? I think I remember a Bunna 10 that was under the same series
@pkingmartin I bought the Bunna as well. Haven't opened it yet but someone I trust rated it very highly.
@pkingmartin and I think a Bunna will hold up better to Sherry / Oloroso / PX as well compared to Auchroisk
@PBMichiganWolverine I hope this isn’t the company’s MO. I just bought a 30 year old Bunnahabhain from them that I’m hoping is spectacular. I’ll let you know once the bottle arrives.
@ContemplativeFox it’s weak spirit + drowning in overactive PX + sentimental label associated with Apollo lunar mission. I have a Highland Park from the same company…I’ll open that next just to see if this was a coincidence or is that company’s entire MO that same strategy
Toast slathered in PX is a great description. I'd throw some sulphur in there too, but that together pretty much sums this up.
@ContemplativeFox let me know if you want to try a sample of this—-you can compare against the purer version. I have a few others I can include as well
@ContemplativeFox @Scott_E totally agree—-I feel as if a heavy hand use of PX would work well with peaty distillates like Lagavulin or any of the Islays . This was too mild, would rather benefit from a simple 2nd fill
That's a bummer. I was already planning on sending you a purer sample of Auchroisk so that's convenient though :) Auchroisk is such a mild spirit - I have no idea why someone would finish it in PX.
Apollo 9 was just a step towards the Show, Apollo 11. Sounds like this falls in line with the program. Lol.
