N: This is much richer and fuller than regular Old Lot Cabin. It actually smells like a rum though. It's sweet with tropical fruits and I even get a little bit of that fireworks smokiness. It's hard to pick out specific scents, but that could well be the fact that this is being served in a shot glass. Some caramel. I wish I could pick out the specific tropical fruits.
P: Sweet with caramel, fruits, vanilla. Then spices. There's more black pepper here with ginger versus the regular Old Log Cabin's white pepper. The higher proof here is a big boon. I get minerals, but with the higher proof they don't substantially hinder the fullness. Some apple notes coming out of the minerals. Banana is the main fruit I get though. It's maybe a tad green, but not super green. This tastes a lot less like rum than the nose suggested. I do get some rumminess with a bit of fireworks and that tropical fruitiness.
F: The sweetness Is pretty much gone. Minerals, some vanilla, big woodiness, some smoke. Largely, it's numbing from the spice.
- Conclusion -
This is definitely a step up from the regular Old Log Cabin, but it's still quite hot and the complexity hasn't developed a ton from the aging. I find this to be an enjoyable sipper, but it leaves a lot to be desired. It tastes about as mature as its age suggests and it complexity is a bit underwhelming. I think I'd rather sip Russell's Reserve 10. So giving this a 15 would be generous. It's far from bad though, so I can't imagine going below a 12. I'm inclined to go with a 14 here. The styles are really different, but this seems competitive with Wild Turkey 101. So, no, this is sadly not worth the money.
