N: Woody and sweet. The sweetness starts as a bit of moderate to light caramel with dusty cinnamon and then it adds some faintly floral tangerine. A little slightly salty minerality. Overall, this is a pretty uncomplex nose, but it's fine. Nothing exciting here though.
P: Nutty, spicy (cinnamon, black pepper, ginger, clove), vanilla, moderate to light caramel. And it just doesn't really develop from there. The caramel developes a little bit into tangerine and if I imagine hard enough I can get some faint cherry. Occasional faint semi-sweet chocolate coming out of a moderated, flat woody layer that does have some tannins to it.
It's decently reach and full, but not very complex or mature or much of anything else really. This is a fine enough palate, but it's a bit youthful (though mercifully only with a little bit of harshness)
F: A bit of wood with just enough tannins to stay relevant. Vanilla with a little bit of that caramel turning into slightly floral tangerine. A dash of the spices here and there.
- Conclusion -
I could drink this, but it's just on that side where I'd rather not. I suppose I could put it in a cocktail, but I'm not really sure I'd want to.
Buffalo Trace (probably a 13) is definitely better than this is. It's far more complex and mature. There's no way that this is higher than a 12.
Ancient Ancient Age (12, though a low one) has a similarly flat character, though it's a more appealing one.
I'm torn between an 11 and a 12 here, but I think my initial statement about not quite wanting to drink this is sort of the description of a quintessential 11, so I'm going with that.
