I'm pretty excited to try this. Chopin Wheat is probably my favorite vodka, so I have a high degree of faith in this brand.
N: The nose is sweeter than I'd expected. And it's toastier with a warmth like lightly toasted oak pulled straight from the oven. There's a bit of a spicy bite to it too.
P: Spicy with a bit of lemon. Clean with sweet stony water, but also some viscosity. Wow, that spice really is strong. It prickles to the point that it's almost harsh, but it isn't quite. With a bigger sip, some grain richness comes out. I wouldn't have identified that as rye though. It's more like corn mixed with wheat and something a tad bitter. Oh, no, now I'm getting that rye. I do taste a bit of alcohol. Some minerals come through too.
F: Slightly spicy with faint bitterness in the back and a mellow sweet blanket. A little bit of the grain still. Pretty nice.
- Conclusion -
This is good. It's well-executed. I don't like it as much as Chopin Wheat though. I'd also take Ocean over this. So this definitely isn't a 16. I'm thinking a 14 or 15. I'm going with the 15. This is a really good rye vodka, but I don't really like rye vodka. This is probably the best of the category I've had though. I could imagine going back and giving this a 16 if I upped Ocean and Chopin Wheat a point too. It's just vodka though: it's hard to justify ever giving it a very high rating.
