Bought this based on @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington review. My experience with aged rum is pretty limited - in addition to this, I've tried a private barrel of Privateer, Mount Gay XO, and Smith and Cross. This is clearly better than the MG and S&C (which ended up being a drain pour after coming back to it for over a year - hogoX💯) and more similar in quality to the Privateer. However, the Privateer comes across as hotter despite the proof being essentially the same, I suspect due to the age of the Foursquare versus the Privateer. On the nose I get banana and carmelized brown sugar on pineapple. The palate is full of vanilla and tropical fruit. Drinks more like 50% ABV than 60 - I had to check twice to make sure I wasn't mistaken. in fact, I just looked again before moving on to the next sentence. There's a little hogo here, more so than on the Privateer, but it fits here and gives the spirit more depth and complexity. I like this more than the Privateer.
Also, I haven't had the pleasure of trying GT Stagg, so I can't say whether I'd take this over it. Having a bottle of the lesser Stagg Jr, I'd say that the quality and experience is fairly similar, although having limited experience with aged rum means that my palate is likely not as attuned to the nuances of the spirit as it might be for whiskey.

I think you got the same layered complexity out of this one that I did - really just unfolded in a pleasant way. @Ctrexman I found this to be plenty sweet but less burnt sugar sweetness than say El Dorado and way less than a Bacardi or the like
@soonershrink There are a number of double pot still special edition bottles out there (their normal process is two distillations, one pot still, one column). To me, those bottles bring just a bit of additional richness to the palate.
@jonwilkinson7309 The private barrel pick I bought is my first and only Privateer experience, but I'm a fan and will definitely try others. Any favorites?
@Ctrexman My rum experience is limited, but I would imagine this is less sweet than others since no sugar added, but it's still rum, so it's plenty sweet to me.
@PBMichiganWolverine Thankfully, the rabbit hole seems pretty shallow locally. Not a lot of selection it seems around here - most seem to be the sugar-added variety, which doesn't much appeal to me.
Great review! I've loved every Foursquare wine finished bottle I've had - Detente, Sagacity, Empery - but have yet to explore the single barrels. Privateer is local to me, and is a personal and sentimental favorite. I've bought an unreasonable number of bottles there. But you're absolutely right - Foursquare has a great touch of rum funk hogo that Privateer lacks.
Nice review. Im still behind the curve with the Foursquare. Just cant seem to get enough of malts but an aged rum is in my future. Would you consider this sweet on a rum scale

@soonershrink no, no, no…what do you doing ? Getting into funky aged rum will end up as another deep rabbit hole, like whiskey
