(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Cù Bòcan Whisky Tasting, 03 February 2022. Hosted by GSC and Cù Bòcan’s Global Brand Ambassador, Scott Adamson).
Nose: Orchard fruit, plums, berry compote, floral/lavender
Palate: Plums, dates, orchard fruit, rum raisins, cinnamon, leather, smoke. More smoke on the palate than the earlier Creation series (1-3)
Finish: Long finish. Leather, cigar smoke, currants & raisins. The cognac/brandy and port sweetness comes through strongly on the finish, with a nicely spicy aftertaste.
Tawny Port & Cognac Casks.
66% finished in Cognac casks. Spirit is 12y/o, inc 3yrs in finishing casks
34% from Tawny port casks. Spirit fully matured for 10years casks.
This dram is floral and fruity and has a really lovely spicy warmth to the fruit. Quite a luxurious tasting whisky, the cognac really shows its influence. Great!
Came 2rd out of the five drams (the new make spirit wasn’t included in the vote), with 38% of the final vote for favourite of the night. 100% of those present said they enjoyed the whisky.
Creation 2 was my vote for favourite of the tasting, although it was very close between Creations 2 and 4 for favourite, and I have unintentionally given all of the Creation series (1-4) the same score. Any separation between them is really just personal taste or what you fancy at that specific moment - they are all very good, well priced whiskies.

@PBMichiganWolverine it worked very well. The spice from the rye cask and the jammy fruit from the Cab Sauv casks layered very well with the light peat - although, the peat on #3 is barely a backnote. My only real niggle was that, while the mouthfeel on the palate was full and buttery, it was a very drying dram on the aftertaste. I often find that with wine finishes, but it seemed more pronounced on this one. It’s a fairly minor criticism, to be honest. #3 is a very good dram.
@icsteel154 the Creation 3 seems really interesting too——red wine cask with a slight peat. What were your thoughts on that ?
@cascode it was a very interesting tasting, all of the Creation series were excellent and very easy to drink. The Signature I’ve had a few times before, it’s not bad but there’s nothing hugely remarkable either. Tomatin is an interesting one, they don’t really stand out at all so it’s easy to forget about them. They do a lot of limited experimental bottles which can be hit or miss (although the Fino cask from last year was very good). The Tomatin Cask Strength in the core range is excellent. I’ve yet to try a good independent bottling of Tomatin from anyone, they vary from ‘meh’ to completely undrinkable (TBWC in particular). For my palate, Cù Bòcan is a more rounded spirit than the standard Tomatin. The little hint of Highland peat with the orange-y base spirit seems to work very well. They operate from the same stills but are a completely separate company and seem to have quite a different approach to their whiskies, particularly their approach to cask sourcing and handling (often quite unusual casks, all air dried), it helps them to stand out a little more than Tomatin themselves.
Sounds like a great tasting event. I’ve not payed much attention to Tomatin in the past and it might be time to correct that. All the Creation expressions sound very interesting.
