Lochlea First Release

Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland

Reviewed February 26, 2022 (edited August 14, 2022)
3.0
3.0 out of 5 stars
(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Whisky Tasting, 25 February 2022). Nose: Berries and cream, vanilla, fudge. Very sweet - icing sugar. Pear drop boiled sweets Palate: Very sweet, rich and heavily sherried. Very fruity, hints of cereals and some spices (clove & cinnamon) Finish: Medium finish. Stewed fruit, black pepper, clove, chilli, allspice and oak. This is quite full-bodied for such a young whisky. Very sweet and very fruity (pear drop sweets). The spices are more dominant on the finish which becomes dry and oaky on the aftertaste. A very drinkable young whisky - not bad at all. It promises good things to come. Came second out of the six drams, with 22% of the final vote for favourite of the night. 74% of those present said they enjoyed the whisky.

    @soonershrink I’m surprised a few made it here to US. These inaugural releases usually sell out in minutes. ( not that they’re good…it’s just flippers and collectors )

    @PBMichiganWolverine I’ve recently seen this at theliquorbarn.com - https://www.theliquorbarn.com/lochlea-first-release-single-malt-700ml/

    @icsteel154 likewise, I buy with the intention of drinking it…but I’m a pathetically slow drinker. Been more like one pour every 2 weeks, so my bottles build up quickly. And I refuse to buy on secondary—-just not worth paying those fees and markup

    @PBMichiganWolverine I completely agree. A good number of these new whiskies can be interesting to try, but as whiskies in their own right they can be a little ‘meh’. I only buy bottles I intend to open and drink (rather than to ‘flip’ or sit on a shelf), so I don’t entertain the secondary market at all. I’m always happy to try the new ones, but there are very few I’d choose to buy even at retail prices.

    @icsteel154 this sold out in minutes, and secondary is well over $200. I’ve learned a lesson that all new 3 yr old inaugurals aren’t worth the secondary
