Thin, bright Kool-aid red. Medicinal cherry, freezer burn, orange rind, mint, sandlewood and maybe even a bit of something nutty. Quite viscous with a near perfect balance between sweet and earthy bitterness.
It is less bright and less sharp than Aperol, which makes sense why the latter works well for a spritz. I think this might fall a bit flat in a spritz but goes well with whiskey, gin and possibly even mezcal.

@cascode @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington Yes. Not sure when I'd ever turn to Campari straight, but Negronis (long on the gin... 1:1:1.5-1.75) are uncomfortably sessionable but the richness of 1:1:2 boulevardiers are the full Maxell logo experience. Such a complete cocktail.
@WhiskyWitch I got all of those notes except the laces with drugs part. Maybe I just need to drink a few ounces straight and turn the music up.
To me, Aperol is the "Kool-aid". Campari is the "cherry hard candy laced with drugs".
@Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington Sounds good to me :)
@cascode I’m finding the Boulevadier is possibly my favorite bourbon cocktail - although I cut corners and add a dash of orange curaçao because I’m too lazy to garnish one
Campari works fine in a spritz, but for my taste it's best without prosecco or champagne - just soda and ice, maybe a twist of peel. The Boulevardier is the sine plus ultra of Campari cocktails.
Nailed it: Aperol for a spritz and this for high proof cocktails.
