Del Maguey Arroqueño Mezcal
Mezcal Joven — Oaxaca, Mexico

On the nose, bell pepper, plantain, pear, a little smoke. The palate has pear, pineapple (not sure why so many P-words), and smoked veggies. This is a little more sour/fruity than Iberico. As with Iberico, the smoke comes across as light. Overall, I think Iberico is more interesting and this one more approachable. While I typically prefer interesting to approachable, I enjoy drinking this one more. I still think this would be a mood-dependent drink for me, but again I appreciate it as a well-made spirit. For whatever reason, mezcal doesn't seem to suit my palate in its current iteration, but I imagine I'll revisit again in the future. Once again, I'm really grateful to have received this sample from @pkingmartin.

@Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington The pechuga? I'd probably grab it. Based on the quality of the arroqueño and hearing that it's even better from @PBMichiganWolverine , it seems like the worst likely outcome is along the lines of thinking it's a $150 bottle, which is fairly mild regret IMHO.
@ContemplativeFox I found one locally for $200 - thoughts?
@ContemplativeFox I may be clearly biased —-but was sentimentally my favorite top 3. So— this was pre-Covid, we took a trip to Oaxaca and Mexico City. One day, we drove 2 hours north of Oaxaca, visited some small villages , and stumbled on this farmer co-op distillery. We bought some produce, had lunch and this mezcal with the locals. So— the experience added to the favoritism
@PBMichiganWolverine I took a sniff of that farmers' co-op one last night and it smelled really good! I got an espadin-meets-cupreata vibe from it, which is great because espadin is a bit bland and cupreata is a bit eccentric. I've passively had an eye open for Del Maguey Pechuga, but maybe I need to look a little bit harder for that one too.
@ContemplativeFox personally, my top 3 mezcals were, in order, Del Maguey Iberico, Del Maguey Pechuga, and that farmer’s cooperative one with no name ( but, I’m biased since I drove 2 hours north of Oaxaca and visited that co-op)
@PBMichiganWolverine that says a lot about iberico. I need to track it down.
This was my favorite mezcal, till Iberico showed up.
