Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured (2015 Edition)
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland
Reviewed
April 10, 2022 (edited April 19, 2022)
(Good Spirits Co. Glasgow – Virtual Whisky Tasting, 18 March 2022).
Nose: Smoke, wet wood, caramel, sweet and a little salty. Black pepper and plums as a subtle backnote
Palate: Sweet smoke, walnuts, pepper, ginger, dark chocolate. Strangely soft, sweet smoke.
Finish: Long finish. Burnt sugar, dark fruits, quite smoked, but still containing lots of dried fruit and malt loaf. Christmassy.
46 Madeira hogsheads, filled in 2016.
This is an interesting dram, not bad - quite woody and smoked, with a good amount of fruit. Not particularly remarkable. Juicy, salty and ultimately drying. A decent dram.
Came third out of the six drams, with 7% of the final vote for favourite of the night. 100% of those present said they enjoyed the whisky.

I just got this one. I hadn’t tried the original , but personally I always found Kilchoman ranging from “good” to “really good”. Can’t go too wrong
I gave it 2 stars back in 2018, which was based on a 2015 bottle. I think it was a bit rushed back then and they have it more under control now, but it's my least favourite Kilchoman. I have a lot of time for Sanaig and Loch Gorm, and I don't mind Machir Bay, but it's not a whisky I buy.
@cascode I hadn't tried any of their earlier Madeira cask releases to compare it against, but this was OK. I quite like their spirit generally, but I've yet to have any that have really blown me away. This was perfectly drinkable, but not really memorable.
I tried the first relesae of this in 2015 and thought it was poor. It sounds like it has come a long way.
