Bowmore 12 Year
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland

N: Lemon wood polish, bitter (harsh) medicine notes, caramel apple, buttered white bread toast, and just a hint of tropical fruit. White tea, honey, cracked black pepper. Something like a wet cardboard smell. Few more hard swirls and I get a lemon-orange citrus cream.
P: Little flat on entry, but after a second... Smoked caramel with lemon juice spritzed all over it. Red apple, honey, cracked black pepper, toffee, and a bread pudding made with a dark bread. Finish brings a big, round caramel and butterscotch note - seriously feels like you're sucking on a candy. Then the lemon with a bit of that wet cardboard note, some black pepper and/or ginger spice, and some faraway sort of amorphous notes of Islay peat smoke (burning tires, medicine, tar, iodine, etc.)
Respect to Bowmore for still doing at least some on-site floor malting. For me, there's just too much lemon in this. Not my favorite. But the profile is interesting generally for being something a little different for an Islay. This bears very little to no resemblance to the big and beasty Ardbegs, Lags, and Frogs. It doesn't have the subtlety of Laddies and Kilchoman. Comparatively, it's a little flatter of a profile with less range and less pop than those houses. It just feels like a little less-than in comparison. I doubt I pick up this bottle again, but I'm curious enough I may move up the core range and see what I find.

@DjangoJohnson I think it’s worth taking a flier on at <$55 if those other malts mentioned are up your alley in any way. It’s gotta be pretty poor stuff for me to regret the new experience on a reasonable ably priced entry level pour. @skillerified point me to the $45 Lag and the shelf shall be cleared, good sir!
@DjangoJohnson Let us know what you think. Better yet, come join the discord and tell us. Would love to have you both. @bigwhitemike
@skillerified @bigwhitemike They just put this on clearance around me dropping it from 67$ to 54$, and even then I was hesitant. I’ve always wanted to try it but 67$ was just too much. I decided 54$ was fair enough but I haven’t cracked it yet to try it out.
@bigwhitemike It makes more sense at that price, for sure. I think I just subjectively am not a fan of the lemon. It's not a flaw or anything bad, I just don't like it. The Lagavulins have that sometimes too, but they have so much more going on that it feels like background vocals rather than the lead here. But I suppose you probably won't find any Lag at $45.
This is one I know doesn’t always rank for a lot of people, but I found it grew on me pretty well… like an unusual combination Old Pulteney 12 (lemon cream salt) and Talisker Storm/10 (smoke sherry salt). Maybe a dash of Bunna 12, although this smoke isn’t as refined as either of those last two… seems dirtier/ashier. I am a sucker for sweeter scotch though so this is in that vein. It’s far from perfect but a nice little option when found for a reasonable price. I would not buy at $60, but have stumbled across a few stores/sales for about $45 and I’d probably always take them up on that offer.
