Brenne French Single Malt Whisky
Single Malt — France
Reviewed
July 23, 2022 (edited July 31, 2022)
Nose: Dried tropical fruit, cough medicine, floral, cow dung, pear drops and strawberry bonbons
Palate: Cherry sweets, red liquorice, vanilla, brandy, white wine, black pepper, cinnamon, unripe banana
Finish: Medium finish. Pineapple, coconut, chocolate, Cognac/Armagnac, black pepper
This does not taste like a whisky at all. Fruity and spicy, with more brandy flacvour than whisky. The cow dung hints on the nose are pretty awful, but not to distraction.

So from a quick search I discovered that this is a young single-farm product matured in new Limousin oak barrels and ex-cognac casks. I can see how that would give a youthful light spirit an unusual profile. I wonder if ageing in charred 2nd-fill casks for a few months would suck out some of the more wild congeners and improve the profile?
@PBMichiganWolverine @cascode I love a brandy, but this doesn’t work as either a whisky or a brandy. It falls flat on every level, unfortunately.
This is more cognac or brandy than whiskey. I had this when it first came out, thought the nose was simply too perfume-y aromatic, and totally fell apart on the palette
It sounds marvellous - but it's not whisky as we know it, Captain :-)
