Compass Box The Peat Monster
Blended Malt — Scotland
Reviewed
August 21, 2022 (edited December 7, 2022)
Almost reminiscent of Tolkien's Watcher in the Water, Peat Monster is not for the faint of heart. Fueled by a blend of Caol Ila and Laphroaig, the nose unleashes bonfire-medicinal hybrid smoke, iodine and white pepper. Seaweed, grapefruit and a touch of mead are covered in ash. After a fearless, sweet and spicy attack, the palate marches on with raw peatiness, creamy citrus fruits and anise. Slightly dry towards the end, the finish emphasizes eucalyptus, smoked ham and hints of brine. A whisky with fire and depth, this creature takes no prisoners!

@PBMichiganWolverine Never touch a running system, if it worked for JW, it will work for Compass Box...
@Slainte-Mhath even if they had an extinct in there, didn’t Johnnie Walker already try that with their Ghosted series? Which were actually really good.
@PBMichiganWolverine @angstrom Ultramarine seems to be the first release of their new series. Not sure why they call it 'Extinct' Blends Quartet, as none of the components are from a closed distillery. Maybe it's just a cool name to justify the insane price tag?
@Slainte-Mhath Yeah, looks like their $400 line up.
@PBMichiganWolverine Ultramarine was announced a few days ago, I couldn't find the retail price: https://www.compassboxwhisky.com/whiskies/ultramarine
@Slainte-Mhath is Ultramarine a new one? Another heavily priced one I’m sure…like Tobias or Vellichor
Additional comment: Btw, I forgot to mention that this bottle was a birthday gift by my wife... she was upset that I didn't credit the source 😱
@angstrom Thanks, my goal is to compare the entire Compass Box core range and beyond. I have quite a few of the Limited Releases (Ethereal, Experimental Grain, Flaming Heart 5th & 6th Edition, Magic Cask, Menagerie, No Name No. 3, Rogues' Banquet and Stranger & Stranger), but most of these are rather expensive and hard to replace. I might be buying Ultramarine if the price is not completely nuts, and I'm still hunting 'The General'. Cheapest offer I got was $1600... No, thanks.
@Slainte-Mhath That is an awesome upcoming line-up. Looking forward to the reviews.
Additional comment: My Compass Box journey continues, next stops: Oak Cross & The Story of the Spaniard (September), Menagerie (October), No Name & No Name No. 3 (November) and Flaming Heart (December). Previously reviewed: Spice Tree (88 pts), Hedonism (86 pts) and Orchard House (85 pts). @PBMichiganWolverine I followed your advice and bought the Experimental Grain, something for next year!
Additional information: This review is for batch L 16 01 22, consisting of 64% Caol Ila, 35% Laphroaig and 1% Highland Malt Blend.
