Broken Barrel Reserve Oak Series 115 (Rum and Ex-Rye Cask Staves)
Bourbon — USA

Sweet nose with a bit of a youthful grain note. Palette is mellow with a slight spice likely from the 25% rye stave profile. Relatively thin mouthfeel for the 115 proof point and very quick finish.
Overall, a worthwhile experiment in wood finishing with younger whisky. At the sub $40 price point for a cask strength bottle in 2022, there’s not much to be mad at. Broken Barrel also gets points for transparency with the mashbill and “oak bill” right on the bottle. All that’s missing is an age statement. Given a couple more years and this could be a real hitter for the $.
