Balvenie The Sweet Toast of American Oak 12 Year
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland

On the nose I’m struck initially with minerally and musty, very unexpected from my prior experiences with Balvenie. There’s an element that reminds me of Dickel whiskey. Then apricot, honey, and oddly watermelon rind, followed by vanilla and oak. The palate carries much of the same. The finish is notable for some of the barrel spices you typically find in bourbon. I don’t know that I like this better than the 12 Doublewood. It’s more interesting and the spicy finish is nice, but the Doublewood is such an easy drinker.
Update: each subsequent taste has me liking this less and less. Maybe my bottle was spoiled somehow, because there's something sour and off-putting about this. Score is falling. Dropping a full point and could go lower.
Update 2: either my bottle was spoiled somehow, or I have a genetic taste thing like people who taste soap in cilantro, but I quite dislike this. The sour funk seems to keep growing.

@soonershrink i wouldn’t either. In general , I’m not a fan of Balvenie except for 3 of their releases : an extinct 10yr old that came in a cognac shape bottle , their 14 peaty one, and the unattainable 1409 Tun series
@Ctrexman @PBMichiganWolverine yes, I do think the bottle was spoiled somehow. Definitely didn't taste like what I expected, or like how others have described it. I'm also not willing to buy another to find out.
@soonershrink this sounds like a spoiled bottle. Wondering if something during transit, like a blast of heat or full on sun
I am surprised this is probably the biggest impression gap we've had. I usually align with your tastes on most whiskeys. I just got gifted another bottle of this and still find it delicious
@Ctrexman Yeah, I couldn't pass up the value, although I generally don't buy whiskey under 45-46%.
slu...t
I am a bit of a Balvenie **** though
Damn at $50 Id buy several I really enjoyed this one much more than the 12
