Cotswolds Founder's Choice

Single Malt — Cotswolds , England

Reviewed October 20, 2022 (edited May 30, 2023)
4.25
4.25 out of 5 stars
Continuing my Cotswolds series, I have a sample of their Founder’s Choice that was bottled at 60.1% ABV. The nose is bold and rich starting with powdered sugar dusted strawberries, caramelized mangos, and leather then blond roast espresso, pipe tobacco and toasted coconut followed by raspberry pie, dehydrated apricots and grilled pineapple rings that transitions to baking spices and polished cedar furniture with high ethanol burn. The taste is a dense and oily mouthfeel starting with creamy tropical fruits, sautéed strawberries and leather then a spicy blonde roast mocha, freshly lit pipe tobacco and coconut macaroon followed by freeze dried raspberries, apricots and lemon lime candy that transitions to baking spices, black pepper and polished cedar furniture with high ethanol burn. The finish is long with raspberry pie, dehydrated apricots, creamy tropical fruits, honeysuckle, spicy blonde roast mocha, black pepper, baking spices and polished cedar furniture. This is simply wonderful that the higher proof has intensified those typical Cotswolds flavors while avoiding the high spice that I found on their Reserve and drinks far older than I expected with some polished oak notes. At 60.1%, the proof is evident throughout the experience and I wouldn't advise this to anyone that isn't used to drinking higher proof spirits as it might be too hot, but for anyone that's beat their palate down and acclimated to those higher proof drams, this would likely be a fantastic one to buy a dram or bottle of. At the price of around $80+, I think this is an absolute bargain in today's market that can compete with some of the best spirits out there without needing to break the bank account.

@pkingmartin @Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington I visited them in 2017, shortly after that were open. Not planned, but happen to pass by them on a vacation to Cotswolds. They had readily available inaugural whiskey easily available right on their shelves, for a mere $50 USD. Their setting there in the Cotswolds is so beautiful, worth a visit. The other one we visited was Lakes Distillery, farther up north in the Lakes District. Even more of a gorgeous setting.

@Bourbon_Obsessed_Lexington Yeah, I think they fly under the radar of most since their an English distillery that has only been open since 2014 with their first single malt released in 2017. Hopefully they remain under the radar for awhile longer as their single malt ages as I’d really like to try a 10 year old from them without needing to deal with the hassle of being the quickest to add it to my cart online.

I’d never even considered this distillery - what a find!

@PBMichiganWolverine Wow, that sounds amazing and I hope one day to visit their distillery. So far, I’ve found every pour highly enjoyable and very reasonably priced which seems hard to find in any distillery.

@pkingmartin i’m unabashedly biased towards Cotswold…did a distillery visit while we were in London/Cotswold/Lake District for vacation some years back. Amazing tranquil setting , with such a friendly staff.
