Nose: Damp peat smoke, sweet vanilla, plum jam, dried fruit
Palate: Sweet peat smoke, dried fruit - dates, salted plum, prunes. Salt/ saline. White pepper and vanilla wisps
Finish: Very long finish. Sweet, salted and peaty. There’s a huge hit of sweet dried fruit, with some fresh cranberries and orange peel. Dark chocolate, coffee and wisps of bonfire smoke
Distilled 2005
Bottled 2020
Ex-Pedro Ximénez sherry cask finish
This is a sweet, fruity and peaty dram. Much sweeter than the standard 16y/o, but maintaining the peat smoke backbone. The dried fruit is beautifully integrated with the damp peat smoke, giving a deep and luxurious note to this sweet whisky. Excellent dram.

This is the best description I’ve read of my all-time favorite whisky. Now, if you added one more star, you would’ve nailed it 100%. Cheers! 🙂🥃🥃
@PBMichiganWolverine @DrRHCMadden very good call! I have one of each of the three open in the cabinet right now!
@icsteel154 @DrRHCMadden it’s definitely a two bottle purchase . Both are excellent in their own right …maybe throw in the Ardbeg Uigi and make it a three bottle purchase
@DrRHCMadden It’s a really close run race between those two. I always have a bottle of the Talisker DE open in the cabinet and it’s probably my most often finished bottle. The Lagavulin DE is an excellent sweet and peaty dram, and has a completely different character to the Talisker. You’re right, it would be a really tough choice to just go for one - definitely sounds like a two bottle purchase!
I have been tossing up a Lag DE and a Talisker DE for about 6 months now. Your review has only solidified my notion that I need more information/a two bottle purchase.
