Wolves Signature Blend (2022)
Blended American Whiskey — California , USA
Reviewed
June 4, 2023 (edited August 25, 2023)
This variation of Wolves signature blend incorporates a 7-year old whiskey distilled from California Pale Ale, and 6 and 7 year-old rye whiskeys with a higher rye-content along with another whiskey in the blend that was distilled from Stout beer, aged in used French Oak for 9 years and bottled at 51.5% ABV.
The nose starts with a mix of rich honey sweetened pale ale and mild hoppy bitterness then freshly baked pumpernickel bread topped with apricot preserves followed by lemongrass, tangerine and nectarines that transitions to light baking spices, spearmint and polished oak with medium ethanol burn.
The taste is a medium to full mouthfeel starting with rich honey over creamy citrus that quickly veers towards mild hoppy bitterness that fades to chocolate covered almonds and espresso followed by lemongrass, charred pumpernickel bread topped with apricot preserves and grilled peaches that transitions to spearmint hard candy, mild baking spices and polished oak with medium ethanol burn.
The finish is medium length starting with a mild hoppy bitterness that is balanced by creamy citrus fruits that then fade to pumpernickel bread topped with whipped honey butter, light mocha, lemongrass, spearmint hard candy and polished oak.
This is incredibly unique with a nose that has rich honey sweetness that is countered by hoppy and rye notes along with creamy citrus that carries over to the palate that veers slightly over bitter with those hoppy and rye notes that fades quickly and finishes with a beautiful balance of hops and rye notes along with sweet citrus.
At around $120+, I think these are well worth the cost as it’s something different in today’s market.
Thanks @PBMichiganWolverine for the generous sample, as I likely never would have tried this otherwise.

Apparently I can't tag people now. Maybe someone else can tag @Scott_E?

@Scott_E i did…not sure how to invite. Maybe @skillerified can?
@PBMichiganWolverine did you use your same username?
@PBMichiganWolverine i will check it out since you have endorsed. In hearing/reading these complaints, I thought maybe I was an outlier. The app has been glossed up. But the basics of easily sharing thoughts and experiences have been lost. The community of the previous app seemed be more disparate. I will still use it for my notes and references.
By the way, @Scott_E , I did join the Discord site that @skillerified set up. You should come in as well
@pkingmartin @DjangoJohnson @cascode me too. Coming here less and less. And when I do, it’s using the desktop site on my iPad instead of the mobile app. I’m surprised they rolled out the app updates without a beta test. Can’t imagine any tester liking it
I don’t know. I find I’m coming here less and less so if there are other users doing the same and their traffic goes down they may have to address it at some point
@PBMichiganWolverine @cascode @DjangoJohnson @pkingmartin Yep, I made all these complaints through support, largely told there is nothing wrong and to use the filters. New app is crap. But, best we’ve got I guess. Unless we all start our own! Haha. Until then, I like you @pkingmartin, will Continue to put my ramblings into the ether
@PBMichiganWolverine @cascode @DjangoJohnson It seems that Distiller decided to push their user base back towards desktop and away from mobile in a bold move of deploying an “Upgrade” that requires you to either be deemed “Featured Content” or fall within the last 20 or so engagements of those users you follow. Perhaps their ad revenue will ramp up via the desktop usage or more likely their dedicated user base that create content might just start to consider alternative options in how to discuss their favorite spirits with each other if they get tired of the app and desktop experience. Who can say what the future will hold, as I’m just a man with a glencairn in an exploration of liquids to hopefully discover a dram that is suited to be declared the nectar of life and until then, will just write my dribble in the Distiller app and hope future “Upgrades” will truly enhance the user experience.
@cascode @PBMichiganWolverine I am with you on the app sucking. My initial feeling was that I didn’t like that they were showing me featured content but at first you could at least filter it out. Now the filter doesn’t work. Also don’t like that they separated personal notifications from the main feed as I think it tends to incentivize narcissism in people checking only reactions to their own posts, especially given what a mess the main feed is. New, certainly. Improved? Nope.
@PBMichiganWolverine The app is pants now. I just use a browser interface. At least it works.
@pkingmartin starting to hate this app. I didn’t even see this review until @cascode liked it…can’t scroll beyond 20 or so reviews. But—-totally agree with you—- this was worth the price considering the crazy uniqueness. Not sure I’d buy again, but glad I got it this time
