This isnt my favorite JW, that would be the Green, but given very few other options, this isnt bad.
Im having this while in the African safari bush—-our trekker pulled over rhe jeep, started a bonfire, and pulled out a few drink options ( coffee, tea, wine, a JW red, and a JW double black). The picture attached is where we pulled over. I went for this, over some ice.
Slight peat, just enough to make you know it’s there. Honey, caramel, and cereal are the predominant characteristics. I do get some Caol Ila-esque DNA…but muted.
Overall, a solid choice—-one bottle i wouldnt normally buy, but would gladly choose as the go-to option in weddings, parties, and here—-in the African safari game viewing.

@BDanner @Scott_E @Richard-ModernDrinking yeah you’re right…any pour tastes amazing here with the view and sounds of the bush. I did try a local African liquor called Amarula which was pretty good. Overly sweet, good to have once., but can’t see myself buying a full bottle. From the Cape Town airport, I just picked up a TRe Jack Daniel’s bold and spicy —-happy to share when I get back
@cascode the Okavango was amazing. Nike crocs resting in the sun, elephants bathing by the river. My next to-do, maybe a few years from now will be gorilla trekking in Rwanda
@PBMichiganWolverine Very nice - you make me envious. It's 30 years since I travelled that part of Africa but I still remember the Okavango Delta vividly, and Vic Falls was amazing - did you stay at THE hotel?
Goes well with bbq zebra
A good pour considering the options. I am sure whenever there is JW Double Black you will transport yourself back to that moment. The power of aroma, flavor and/or sound (music).
Wow... most any whiskey would be better if you're sipping it with that view.
@cascode I tried that Amarula liqueur—-was pretty good actually. A bit too sweet for me, but I can see it mixing well into a cup of coffee. So—- did SA ( Cape Town , Joburg, Sabi Sands safari), Botswana safari, and Zimbabwe ( Victoria Falls ). Loved it all.
Set and setting makes a difference :-) I have a soft spot for Amarula liqueur, which I first tasted in similar circumstances. Are you just in SA, or travelling elswehere in that region? If you can, see Namibia - it's breathtaking, particularly the desert. Have fun!
