Much better than current 16. Has lots of sherry influence and sweet smoke given I was told the early 90s white horse gold foil labels had a higher proportion of european oak sherry casks while the current one has a small portion of refill european oak casks seasoned with bourbon.

It’s interesting that all of Lagavulin 16’s new product literature only states “oak casks” leaving the consumer to question. A few years ago, the literature stated “American and European oak” with no mention of bourbon or sherry components, but both were implied since America only produced bourbon and European oak only held sherry or other wines. My visit to the distillery in 2017 confirmed that Lagavulin 16’s magic is the vatting of spirits aged in bourbon and sherry casks to some proportion. You will probably never see this in writing. 🙂
