Most young grain whiskies I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, but this Invergordon matured in sherry octave casks made me curious. On the nose, cinnamon, pastries and milk chocolate intermingle with sultanas, dusty cereal notes and hints of sage. After a sugary arrival, the taste develops with dark fruits, peppery spices and eucalyptus. It is a bit hot around the edges, but packed with flavors. Slightly bitter oak, cocoa and fresh mint linger in the surprisingly long finish. One evening, a poor hornet had drowned in this alluring wasp trap - so it can't be bad.

Additional comment: The Glencairn was unattended when the hornet fell into this grain and drowned. When I returned to the table, I had a WTF-moment, this was no ordinary wasp but a huge hornet floating in my glass. What to do with it? This was no expensive bottle, so I went over to the bonfire and splashed the remainder of the dram into the flames. Following a blue blaze, the poor bugger was gone, as it was soaked with cask strength whisky. I felt sorry for the hornet, they are peaceful insects. Far less annoying than all the wasps.
Additional information: Bottled by Kirsch Import for the German market, this is a vatting of 3 sherry octave casks. Bottled at 55.6% ABV, 244 bottles.
