Port Dundas 1988 27 Year (Douglas Laing)
Single Grain — Lowlands, Scotland

I like oddities, drams that are out of the ordinary, different or even strange. The nose of this single grain is a bit unusual to say the least, I get effervescent tablets, raspberry powder and bee sting cake. Notes of baking spices, cereals and distant wood smoke evolve. Honeyed and peppery in the arrival, the palate develops with green walnuts, blueberries and charred oak. It turns aromatic, herbal and almost peaty. Mild citrus fruits, floral vanilla and a touch of coffee linger in the grassy finish. This Port Dundas is full of surprises, unveiling a singular flavor profile.

@cascode Einar's Distillery recently released a 5-year-old whisky, while Faer Island Distillery will bottle their first single malt in 2026. They provide a few cask samples for my visit, and offer a range of gin and aquavit. Einar's has a long history in beer brewing (since 1888), and they operate a Holstein still from Germany. The newer Fear Island Distillery is far larger in scale, more reminiscent of Scottish distilleries.
@PBMichiganWolverine I did not know they had any distilleries, let alone two. The Faroe Islands have been on our to-do list for a while now. Hmm, addin Iceland and Lerwick Distillery on the Shetlands and that’s a nice “most northerly distillery” trek.
@PBMichiganWolverine A great destination to visit! Actually, it is pretty close to Scotland, so it makes sense to produce whisky.
@Slainte-Mhath Faroe is on my list…hopefully next year.
Next week, I am embarking on a short trip to the Faroe Islands. Two distillery visits are included, Einar's Distillery (Føroya Bjór) and Faer Isles Distillery. My next review will focus on a whisky from this remote place.
Additional information: This Port Dundas was matured in a refill hogshead (DL 11037), and bottled in 2016 for the German market (56.1% ABV, 231 bottles).
