Slainte-Mhath
Auchentoshan 12 Year
Single Malt — Lowlands, Scotland

Uninspiring, sanitized and anemic - many whisky drinkers have given up on Auchentoshan, which is a shame. The nose of this triple distilled Lowlander is light, floral and almost Irish in style, featuring mild citrus fruits, porridge and hazelnuts. After the gentle and slightly thin arrival, the palate evolves with some sherry notes, lemongrass and soft tannins. It has no edges but everything is dialed down and lacks flavor. Cereals, mint and fading caramel mark the clean, fresh and semidry finish. I don't want to be too harsh, but there is a lot of wasted potential.

@cascode Some of the independent bottlings are pretty decent, but the OBs are almost as bad as Bowmore's official bottlings.
Agreed. The distillery has its fans but I've never been one. I've always got an unappealing pine-resin note from both the nose and palate, particularly with the young expressions.
Additional comment: This is a re-review of the old version of Auchentoshan 12, but I doubt that recent batches are any better. This Lowland distillery deserves owners who actually know what they are doing.
