Longrow Peated
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland

Longrow Peated is one of the few Springbank bottlings that is readily available, but it is also the only one without an age statement. Is it any good? Youthful, earthy and slightly peppery, the nose opens up with coal smoke, pears and canned peaches, and I get hints of pinewood, spent matches and lemon peel. A dirty peat blast kicks off the palate, followed by tropical fruits, nutmeg and a touch of sea salt. Menthol, grapefruit and waves of oak spices fade in the sooty finish. It offers a different take on peated whisky, but I would not pay through the nose for it.

Additional comment: I think this malt has improved since I last tasted it in 2017, but maybe it is just my palate that has evolved, who knows.
First reviewed in 01/2017 (as part of the old, discontinued Campbeltown Malts Gift Pack): Here comes another peated malt that isn't from Islay: Longrow Peated (NAS) from Springbank distillery. The aroma starts out promising with intense honey-vanilla sweetness, vegetal peat smoke and unmistakably coastal/briny notes. On the palate, the mouth-warming, dry and spirit-driven arrival is followed by bitter lemons, white pepper and briny blast of peat. Its youthfulness shows in the earthy, mineral but surprisingly short finish that is not very substantial. To sum up, this is a fresh and appealing malt which doesn’t have the 'oomph' of Islay.
