Review #50 - Whisk(e)y #34
Bought as 100ml, as part of Glenmorangie 12, 14, 15 tasting set, thus not the best price per ml.
Chill-filtered - Yes
Artificial Colour - Yes
ABV - 43%
Aspect - short-medium legs, deep-gold colour, copper hue.
Nose - clear sherry influence, darker fruit, indistinct dried fruit, prominent oak and sharp oak spice, vanilla and some honey.
Palate - quite mouth-coating, on the front end there is a much lighter fruit note, unknown to me, mouth-numbing very sharp spice, chilli, but fades away quick, leaving an oilyness, with extremely subtle malt influence.
Finish - very short, dryness, oak, subtle dried fruit (fig, dates, raisins). After-taste is very subtle but presents more pleasant sherry-cask qualities, with minor bitterness.
Water sharpens the nose even more, bringing forward the oak, however it heavily mellows the spice notes on the palate, maintaining the woodiness. Slightly better taste with dilution.
Extensive oxidation brings forth crispbread, sweetness, creamyness, and makes the sherry shine through a bit more...tastes great then, but that is 2 months after a more than half empty 100ml bottle...
Glenmorangie is a overall major disappointment for me. Overly spicy, either very short finishes, unbalanced palates, or both. Too much oak. Out of the 12yo, 14yo quinta ruban and 15yo lasanta...15yo is decent but Glenfiddich 15 is waaay better, 14yo Quinta Ruban is unique, and the 12yo...I don't even want to talk about it. Representative finishes which are interesting, but not helpful if the base is overoaked and has problems.
