I’ve seen excellent reviews of this rum, so it may simply come down to my palate, but overall it is very similar to Bacardi Superior. It does have slightly less of a rubbing-alcohol aroma—though only marginally. The mouthfeel is also a bit heavier than Bacardi Superior’s, but it’s still thin, and the flavor remains dominated by rubbing alcohol. After a few minutes, the aftertaste is still alcoholic and harsh, offering none of the fruity notes that Bacardi Superior at least provides on the finish. Even when mixed with cola, it tastes more like vodka than rum.

Interesting. These are definitely competing in the same bracket so I may have to side-by-side to choose my preferred budget Puerto Rican white. I did so with the gold and Don Q won handily. Cheers
@NorthernBourbonTiki I don't know man, at least Bacardi Superior has some rum aftertaste to me--this was just pure alcohol.
This sounds similar to my own experience. But, I think, the draw is simply the edge you noted this has over Bacardi? Best guess… granted, I bought my first bottle because it was an old-school previous-generation bottle and it may have suffered some degradation due to poor storage over several years. But it tasted similar to what you describe here.
