After several attempts to find this bottle in stock, I finally managed to secure the "Green Label." Given its reputation as the "Poor Man’s Pappy," my expectations were high. It’s a bottle that carries the weight of the Buffalo Trace legacy, and I was eager to see if it lived up to the hunt.
The Profile
• Nose:
Remarkably balanced and classic. It opens with the quintessential bourbon DNA: rich vanilla and toasted apple. There is a lovely "soft wood" note—reminiscent of walking through a damp forest after a gentle rain. It isn’t overly complex or aggressive; rather, it promises a soft, easy-to-drink experience.
• Palate:
The expected wheated sweetness is there, accompanied by bright apple notes. While the oak is restrained, there is a surprising hit of bitterness that leans a bit heavy for my personal taste. Interestingly, despite being a wheated bourbon (which usually swaps rye’s spice for smoothness), it carries a pleasant, spicy kick characterized by cracked black pepper.
• Finish:
The finish is impressively long, lingering with that unexpected spice and a touch of the aforementioned bitterness.
The Verdict
Rating: Highly Recommended (In Category)
Weller Special Reserve is a very enjoyable bourbon and 100% worth the retail price. It rightfully earns its spot among the best bourbons in its price bracket. However, the "hunt" can be exhausting—and if I’m choosing a favorite in this range, Eagle Rare 10 still holds the crown for me.
