Sambuca product of Strega from Benevento, Italy. Tasting neat, poured from a 50ml mini I brought back from Italy.
Great art deco label. Dark blue/purple/black in the glass, and opaque. A sambuca colored with intense peaflower(?). Sweet anise on the nose, light herbal scent. In the mouth, sweet sweet, then a light anise flavor shows up and continues to build with an alpine herbal quality. Thick coating mouthfeel and mild flavors, like Strega, touch of ethanol. The finish holds herbal anise and gets better as the sweet fades. Sticky tingling lips, clean and light licorice finish.
This really has the same mouthfeel and sugar profile as Strega. The color is startling (like Strega, that is why I bought them in Naples). It's milder than other sambucas I've had (but, like this, they're all too sweet too) and it is less forceful on the licorice and alcohol spectrum. That's why I like raki and ouzo more-- less sweet more anise and ethanol. So this is easier to drink after dinner, but also less interesting. But... enjoy it anyway. Ciao bella.
