I've only had one other Highland Park before. It was their special release Freya, which I found absolutely amazing. This 12 isn't bad, just not good enough. The nose is actually the best part. You get a whiff of ocean air; a briny salty aroma. I can go on smelling this all day. You feel as if you're on a fishing boat out in the ocean. But, that's it then...the palette is a let down. There's a taste of citrus and smoke, but really not strong enough. Finish is short, but not bitter. It can do a with a few more years in the barrel (and from what I've heard...the 18 is amazing). I'm not sure about the VFM on this. For $50, I'd much rather buy something else...much better quality there for this price range. It's not bad. Just not good enough compared to what else you can buy for that price.

Great review Pranay. I felt the same exact way after trying a glass. I'll have to save up for some 18 though. =)
Slainte: probably, who knows. But, you're right---I find it hard to have a 'bad' HP. Not like it's a bottom shelf item. Can be just a bad batch
Well, it's probably the low ABV - with 43 or even 46%, the flavor would be more intense. Also, I heard that 'batch variation' has become an issue with HP. Maybe you were unlucky and got a bottle of less sufficient quality? I currently have an open bottle of HP12 and find it quite enjoyable...
I'll have to check those options out, thanks!
Wait, sorry---Laga 8 isn't in the US yet
Balvenie 12 is a great option. Compass Box has a few good ones at that range -- Great King Stret, as well as PEat Monster. Another good one would be Laphroaig 10. If you stay away from Scotland, you can get great options in US, India, and Canada. Lot 40 (Canadian Rye), High West Rendevous (American Rye), Amrut (Indian) , Crown Royal Northern Harvest (Canadian), Lagavulin 8. Out of these, personally I'd go,for the Laga 8 or High West.
What would you recommend in the same price range ($50)?
