You can be prepared for what's to come as soon as you open the bottle, and your spouse from across the room says " I smell burning seaweed...is something on the stove?" I'm 80% aroma, so I love any malt that opens up to the nose in such fashion. Seaweed, brine, salted cod, a touch of honey, and iodine. All in one wave after another. This isn't your every day drink. But, much better when it's cold and wet outside...like it was in NJ this weekend with howling 50mph winds and pouring rain. A must-have----no enthusiast can be complete without having this basic foundational Islay whisky.

I don't know why, but this malt is the only peated one I knock a few marks off, because I dislike the peat. It's probably the 'cold ashtray' component that I am stuggling with. Beyond doubt a remarkable malt, but not for everyones palate I guess...
I've been meaning to try the 18. Quite honestly, until lately, I've stayed away from Laphroaig. I had it early when I first trying whisky, but hated it back then. Only recently I guess my taste buds probably have evolved to having Islays. ( evolved, or numbed out...)
Excellent review, I've only dabbled with the 18yo... Got to move this up my priority list!
