Longrow Peated
Single Malt — Campbeltown, Scotland

Here comes another peated single malt that isn't from Islay: Longrow Peated (NAS) from Springbank distillery. The aroma starts out promising with intense honey-vanilla sweetness, vegetal peatiness and unmistakably coastal/briny notes. On the palate, the mouth-warming, dry and fairly spirit-driven arrival is followed by bitter lemons, white pepper and salty peat smoke. Its youthfulness shows in the earthy, mineral but surprisingly short finish that is not very substantial. To sum up, it's a fresh and appealing malt which doesn’t have the 'oomph' of Islay.

I think your best option of a peated malt beyond Islay is Ledaig from Isle of Mull (but I guess you already know that!). My hope is that older bottlings of Longrow have more substance and character than this affordable entry-level malt. Furthermore, remember that palates are different, so you might discover that you actually enjoy this whisky more than I did!
Great review, Slainte. It leaves me a bit disheartened, though, as I had high hopes for this one and recently added a bottle to an online order. I'm always looking for a great peated whisky that isn't too heavy or too much of a chore to drink for those times I want peat without all the big body notes of Laphroiag or Ardbeg. I had the Ailsa Peated sample that Pranay sent, but that isn't available in the USA just yet. I guess I need to keep searching, haha.
