Going through a few of my MoM samples as I'm starting to gear up for round 2 in our little trading team. This is from an undisclosed Islay distillery, aged 8 years. I'm getting seashells and brine on the nose, followed by peat and fresh citrus fruits on the palette. If I had to guess, I'd say this is a Caol Ila. It's not as muscular as an Ardbeg or Lag, and lacks the band aid of the Laphroaig. Caol Ila...putting my money on Caol Ila.

I hear that this is 99.9% Caol Ila as well Pranay... I'll have to snag it sometime if I see it =).
hey Erogers-----Yeah, I took a guess on Caol Ila, because I didn't get the burnt smoke like Lag, or the band-aid astringent aroma from Laph, and I thought Ardbeg didn't make sense from a price point. But, I think the Askaig guys also switch around their Islay distilleries---so, one batch can be Caol Ila, another can be something else. Either way...who cares. Was really good at a decent price point. I got their 16 as well, and the 15 sherry cask (which is now discontinued, and was supposedly really good).
Pranay, I had the 100 proof NAS version of Port Askaig in a sample collection from MoM. I wasn't bold enough to hazard a guess on the distillery of origin, but in retrospect I don't think I would have said Caol Ila, but then that could have been the confluence of youthful juice in the NAS bottling, the high ABV, and my inexperienced palate. It was enjoyable, though. I likened it to drinking a high ABV malt while smoking a peppery cigar.
