Flóki Young Malt 1st Edition
Single Malt — Iceland
Reviewed
May 26, 2017 (edited June 29, 2023)
Eimverk distillery named their young malt after Flóki Vilgerðarson, the first Norseman settler who came to Iceland. Too young to be called 'whisky', this spirit spent about 1-2 years in virgin American oak casks, which are then used to mature their older stock. The aroma is minty-fresh with hints of juniper, vanilla and newly assembled furniture (IKEA). Young, crisp and oily on the palate, there is a delightful herbal freshness that migrates into the mineral and resin-bitter finish. Flóki is definitely an unusual dram that unfortunately comes with a hefty price tag.

Re-reviewed in 06/2023: I visited Eimverk in 2018, had a private tour and pretty generous tasting. Distillery visits tend to influence your ratings, and given that Flóki gets so much hate, I was reluctant to re-visit the sample I had left. I expected disappointment and was ready to adjust my score downwards, but no. I enjoy this more than I anticipated, and double down on my previous score. Remember that these are all different single casks, so there is certainly some variation. However, the hate that Flóki gets is completely over the top. People hear 'sheep dung' and vote it down. This young malt does not even use sheep dung, but unfortunately people are constantly getting it wrong.
Unusual indeed!
One more reason to visit Iceland. Great review!
Additional information: If you ever come to Iceland, don't miss to visit Eimverk distillery at the outskirts of Reykjavík! The distillery tour and tasting is just awesome, and you can also try their selection of gins and aquavits. Well worth a visit!
