I saw one of the master distillers (was either for glenfiddich or glenlivet) recommend doing so in a video and have since tried it as part of my tasting routine. In general I find it makes whiskies more smooth on the palate and opens up some of the less pronounced notes.
Interesting tip, hadn't heard that before!
