Thanks to Ryan, as part of our little Scottish Distillery sample trading team, I got to try this core component that makes up Dewar's. I'm not sure if I ever had Dewar's. Maybe I had. Maybe not. Wasn't memorable either way. Which is surprising, because this was pretty good. Sweet honey and toffee, white chocolate. Really well balanced. I think if you're a seasoned Scotch drinker, this might be too simplistic and one dimensional for you, but this is perfect for the newbie, or a beer drinker curious about Scotch. It's inoffensive, mild, and well balanced without any rough "kick me in the face" peaty flavors. Would I buy a bottle? Probably not. But, I wouldn't refuse a sample either. Thanks Ryan for this! ( Scott...your samples are next in our round 2...finally finished Paul's, Lee's, and Ryan's)

'Not memorable' is probably a very good summary of this Highlander, Pranay. Nice review!
Actually all the bottles we use are 2oz size. 1oz just would be too much of a tease. Lee I have the same issue with raisins. I ate them by the metric ton as a kid and I can't stand them now
Yeah soba, my grandma used to joke that if I ever got thrown in jail for something I probably wouldn't learn my lesson because I thoroughly enjoyed white bread and water as snacks between meals, lol. I also was heavily into fitness and weight lifting when I was in my mid-20's and every magazine, book or video I saw preached water intake. It stuck with me. My friends joke on me today about always ordering water with meals and even my cocktails. Extra benefit there is rarely getting a hangover.
Ah interesting Lee I'm quite similar (well except them backstory around tea). I very rarely (once every few months) have a juice, natural soft drink or maybe a green tea. Just water and alcohol 99.9% of the time. I rarely if ever get sick (had 1 or 2 sick days off work in total in last decade and a half)...we may have found the secret to good health :-)
My mother made me drink so much tea growing up that now I actually dry heave sometimes when I smell it. I've been scared to try a lot of the newer, specialty teas out now. It got so bad that by the time I was 14-15 I gave up everything except water. I still drink tons of water to this day and secretly credit that as the reason I haven't had any major health scares to this point. I don't drink coffee or tea and limit my soda intake to an energy drink here and there in the mornings I'm feeling extra sluggish. It's almost all water, all the time. Well, that and whisky, tequila and the occasional craft beer haha
@Lee: No worries bro....we'll all get there against that wall too. I'll be there once we finish all our rounds I think, will give up whiskey for a while, and switch over to matcha green tea. You'll find me then on those forums, discussing bamboo tensile strengths. ;-)
I know I've been really slack the last 5-6 weeks. I've "hit a wall" with whisky (and alcohol in general) and haven't been as active as I once was. I want to chalk it up to work, the early summer heat here in Virginia, my struggling golf game, my health, blah blah blah. It really just boils down to I've gotten pretty lazy and unmotivated to do much of anything. I'm hoping as the summer progresses that I'll find the motivation needed to keep up with the heavy hitters in this trade group we started. I've still got 50+ unopened bottles sitting around that need to be drank, one way or another. Cheers.
small one ounce ones from amazon...keeps it simple
Thanks for clearing that up! I've been looking to bottle up samples myself to hand out to friends and family who ogle at my whiskey shelves. What kinds of bottles are you using?
@Guyver: Not really. So---it all started when I did a few sample trades point to point with a few folks. Then Lee took it to the next level by proposing five of us get together, and run through all the active distilleries in Scotland. He set parameters: don't purchase anything over $100; 3 samples per round per person; at least a 70 score here on Distiller. There's a benefit of having folks like Paul and myself, that have access to international travel, so we tend to pick up bottles that aren't available here in the US. We're now at round 2, with maybe a total of 6 rounds or so by the time we get done with all the Scottish distilleries. In addition, as an optional only, we normally provide "bonus" samples, which can be other whiskies, beer, or wine that we can find interesting and unique. For example, Paul and Scott provided a local whiskey made only in Michigan and NYC, respectively. I provided a whiskey I picked up in Switzerland, which isn't available anywhere outside a few EU countries. So...not really a whiskey club, more like an 18 month or 2 year whiskey mission. Idea is amazing and innovative.
I've been seeing a good deal of these types of comments...do you guys run a whiskey club or something?
and it just occurred to me...technically, Round 1 isn't done yet. I think the scores aren't in the sheet for some yet
I am so far behind. I have only had one of Paul's samples. Been trying to find the time to enjoy. One crazy-busy summer.
Chugging right along through those samples! I still have all of Scott and Lee's samples to go plus all of the bonuses. Looks like the two of us are the only ones really putting in the overtime!
