Maltnation

Elijah Craig 12 Year

Bourbon — Kentucky, USA

Another Drinks by the Dram bourbon. This is still available in the UK, though my understanding is the 12 yo has been replaced with a NAS product. This was a well balanced whisky not overpowered by sweet or spicy notes. There was a oakiness about it, but not overpowering. It had the typical bourbon notes on the nose, carmel, vanilla and oak. On the palate those carried through but there was also cinnamon and allspice. There was a lovely punsch taste that I really like. The finish was nice, with more punsch flavor, then finished with sweet tobacco and a bit of leather.

The 12 yr is all but vanished in the US, at least in my area. My preferred online retailer doesn't carry it. If you can still get it, do so. On the other hand, the NAS version is almost as good; I had an opportunity a while back to sample them side-by-side.

One of my top five favorite bourbons. I still have a bottle of the 12 year. Gonna hang on to it for a while I think

I love this bourbon/rye review series. Just to clarify, are you saying the 12-year old version is still available in the U.K., although it's been replaced by the NAS Small Batch elsewhere? Or that even in the U.K. this no longer exists?

I'll let you know after Thursday. :-)

Does it pair well with pea and pork soup? ;)
