I love Ardbeg so god damn much. their 10 yr is my everyday drink. oogie is my special occasion and I had very high hopes for this one. It does everything perfectly, except aging in French oak casks. It creates a bitter aftertaste that overwhelms all the nuances of traditional Ardbeg. It's my only complaint but it takes a big hit. Comment and let me know if you feel the same.

I agree with much of your feelings about the French Oak with this one... but in my experience most of that is handled nicely with some water or ice chips, allowing the bitterness to almost disappear and the other deeper flavors to emerge in a rather rich, syrupy fashion. I prefer to drink everything neat at first, but higher proofs almost always benefit from some taming. Of course the heat and mist is nicely tamed here with either watery addition, making this a very drinkable 114 proof. For me this made all the difference and elevated this whisky to very near Lagavulin Distillers Edition status (my current Islay/Scotch fave). Slainte!
