My favorite, ahem, mixed drink is an Irish carbomb. Folks keep telling me that Jameson is stepping up their game lately. The original Jameson is a staple shot for bachannals, not something I dare analyze. Methinks what better way to reevaluate Jameson than to try their Caskmates, which is potentially 2/3 of an Irish carbomb.
VERDICT: This might actually be worse than the original Jameson. Bad stout. It’s not Guinness. Not enough stout. I really have to search for the coffee and dark chocolate notes. The rest is light bodied malty creamy forgettable crap, ala Jameson. The finish is now more bitter, coppery, and unpleasant. Sadly, this is still missing a Guinness and an Irish cream. Caskmates my ass. $33 wasted. MARK: 48/100.

Beer is not my favorite either. The thing probably works one way only: beer improved by whiskey influence. Trying to improve whisky with beer? Some whiskies do taste better side by side with a light beer. Otherwise, I don't know.
Maybe it's my taste buds---I'm not a beer fan. More so red wine and whiskey. And lately, mezcal. Wondering if they make whiskey matured in mezcal barrels? (hey...Jameson, that idea is free for you)
I have to agree with Lee on that point. Bourbon barrel stouts are one of my favorite styles
I don't know, Pranay. I've had some damn good beer that came out of used whiskey barrels. That's what ultimately swayed me into the hard stuff. I wanted to see how a lot of these whiskies tasted BEFORE a solid stout or strong ale sucked the last of the flavor from those casks.
These guys had an interesting marketing gimmick. They even partnered with local craft beer makers in LA, NYC, Austin, and Portland, and developed a "local Caskmates". I tasted the NYC one and LA one...the NYC one was pretty good. LA wasn't. Those were close to $50, and SO not worth it. Lesson learned: either you have beer or whiskey, but not whiskey using beer casks. (or beer using whisky casks, for that matter)
