Aberlour 12 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland

The distillery refers to it as "double cask matured," essentially meaning that it's the product of both sherry and traditional oak aging. Overall, I was left with the impression that this is another faintly sherried whisky that has trouble standing out. That means there are scents of dates and raisins, lending it a Mediterranean air. The highlight was a mild, creamy sweetness that reminded me a bit of a creme brûlée, but that was offset by a coppery or metallic note. In its aroma and its texture, this comes across as a thin whisky. This scotch is a pale imitation of Aberlour A'bunadh, it's more expensive and muscular bigger brother. And I didn't even like that one all that much.

Aberlour A'Bunadh... yeah. I have been trying to get a bottle into the country for quite some time. Spirits about 60% ABV are strictly forbidden in Norway, and since fines are ridiculously high, I didn't dare to smuggle a bottle above 60% ABV. The few batches below 60%, for instance batch #50, are a bit hard to find. Maybe I can get a suitable batch on my next travel...
Ah good to hear lee. I have a bottle of the 18 yet to try. ~$80usd mark for a bottle here which is pretty good for the age
@LeeEvolved really appreciate the 2 cents, I have been a bit disappointed in Aberlour and now consider GlenDronach my go-to for sherried scotch, they are spectacular.
Great review. I really enjoyed the A’Bunadh earlier batches but the last couple I’ve tried have fallen off in quality. I’ve also had the 12, 16 and 18 and I can only really recommend the 18 alongside the older A’Bunadh. It’s as though they need the higher ABV or longer aged juice to offer something with an interesting profile. I felt like the 16 was a complete waste of time and money. Just my $0.02. Cheers.
