Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Single Malt — Islay, Scotland

Smoke and toffee/caramel sweetness up front on the nose, but not as strong as the 10 year. Behind that are hints of vanilla and honey sweetness. Medium bodied. Smoke arrives immediately on the palate with oak and black pepper spiciness, salt with a touch of vanilla. The smoke makes its way to the finish and much further, leaving a cigar-rich palate, mixed nuts and oak, brine/salt and a touch of mint. A splash of water lessens the burn and increases the sweetness. Quite satisfying but I think 10 year is my preference, but this is nice one for the collection. [Dry Glass: Saw dust and vanilla][87/100][11/5/16]

While tasting (actually re-reviewing) I was actually focused on the details of the dram and wasn't thinking about it as a drink for the correct moments. I totally agree with you. Less contemplative than those Laphroaig's which, when you take a step back, is a good thing.
I agree that the 10 has a bit more happening, but I like that the small-cask finishing has knocked a few of the edges off, and makes it more of an anytime/everyday drink. I find that the 10yr (and the CS, and especially the PX) is something I want to ponder a bit while I'm working my way through the glass.
