Thanks to @Generously_Paul , I got to try this smoking beauty. Such a perfect whisky to have when temperatures are like what we have here in the northeast currently, in the sub-0 category. The nose isn't much to speak of, quite light and faintly citrusy, but wow...really hits you in the palette. If you've ever been to Amsterdam, they have these little eels that are finely smoked, topped with sea salt, and a touch of lemon...that's what this taste like. Just a briny, smoky, yet sweet citrusy flavor. Probbaly the best Octomore I've had to date. Thanks Paul

@Richard-ModernDrinking that’s a good price.
I’m at Newark airport and they are selling this at half price in duty free - $95! Sadly I can buy only one bottle.
Nice @PBMichiganWolverine, can’t wait to try them.
@LeeEvolved neither...will save and drink for special occasions (like that hibiki 21)
@PBMichiganWolverine - nice! That’s extremely cool that you’re willing to open those 2 closed distilleries. So, the next big question is: are you gonna flip those beasts and make some quick cash or are you gonna bury them deeper in the cellar and wait for them to turn into bigger diamonds?
@LeeEvolved yeah—-I found two closed distilleries (two that I was willing to open—-the other closed ones were Rosebank, 2 Broras, 3 Karuizawas, 1 Hanyu, and 1964 Glenugie). I added a Pittyvaich and Imperial to the SDT
@PBMichiganWolverine - wow! I bet that list reads like a Hollywood red carpet movie premiere. I guess my biggest question is did you find any bottles that would work for the SDT? That short list is becoming like an Indiana Jones flick. We’re gonna have to go on an adventure for some of those last bottles, I think. 😂
@PBMichiganWolverine - 5 Generals sold at auction today for $1,000 apiece.
@LeeEvolved yeah..it’s one of those bottles I found in my stash over the holiday week when I finally cleaned up and organized everything. And I finally now did a full inventory as well. It’s six pages MSWord single column font 15. Yes...scary. If folks didn’t know me any better, they’d think I’m bound for the Betty Ford clinic
@Rick_M - I’d say $199 is a decent price. I believe I found mine for $189 so after factoring in shipping that’s right on par. @PBMichiganWolverine - wait a minute- so you have a CBW General? (changes tone in voice)...Heyyyy, buddy ole pal, uh do you think you’re gonna open that bottle of General soon, cuz uhhh, you know....uh (makes eye contact/makes eyes water/release single tear 😢 ) because I’d really really like to try that one. I’ll be your best friend.... @Generously_Paul never meant anything to me...I swear.
@Rick_M. Yeah, total wine wouldn't discount--too big of a retailer. The ma&pa stores would.
@PBMichiganWolverine - I get discounts from all my retailers except Total Wine. Never hurts to ask. What was the retail price on The General when it first came out?
@Rick_M I think that’s what I paid for it—-$199. One thing to try is to notice if there’s any decrease of volume on the shelves. Or ask a clerk for something you know is not available like an Ardbeg Ardbog. He/she goes to the computer to check inventory and says ‘we don’t carry that’. Then ask for the bottle you’re interested in and how many they have in stock... he/she will check there on the computer inventory. If you notice that over a few weeks their volume isn’t going down, simply make an offer to the store manager at 40% below list price. Sometimes it works. Worked a few times for me, of which one was getting Compass Box The General for $200
@PBMichiganWolverine - Yes, 309ppm. I did a review on it. You won’t be disappointed! @LeeEvolved - I have that on sale in my area for $199. Is that a good price in your opinion?
Is the 8.3 the 300 some odd ppm one? I'm waiting to pop that open as well.
You’re very welcome Pranay. We were at -6 here yesterday, but with none of the snow and craziness you guys got.
@PBMichiganWolverine - @Rick_M - I’ve got a bottle of the 10yo Octomore I’m dying to open. I wonder what those extra 5 years does to the whisky? Glad to hear that the Masterclass 8.3 is great, too.
Tonight may be record breaking in Boston. Maybe -7 or -8. I’ve only had 3 Octomores but 2 have been 5 stars (6.3, 8.3).
