Glenfiddich Project XX

Another day, another Glenfiddich. I had high hopes for this, because let's be honest here, the name "Project XX" sounds awesome. Unfortunatly, this is my least favorite of the bunch so far. It's not bad, but also not very good, at least not in my opinion. On the nose I get very faint honey, some sharp pepper and zesty citrus notes. This is a pretty accurate representation of what you can expect on the taste. Malty honey, a load of vanilla (this is the primary note for me, and I'm not a big vanilla fan in scotch. When I want vanilla, I drink bourbon), the tart citrus notes with pepper over it. Reminds me of a creme brulee. Certainly not bad, but could use some more spices and fruityness. The vanilla taste is staying quite a while, without being overly sweet. Maybe I'm a bit harsh on this because I had higher expectations, but the 18 blows this out of the water, and even the IPA is more my thing, even though it's more bitter than I usually like. At least it's complex, not something I can say about this vanilla bomb. And for only about 15 bucks difference in price, I'd grab the 18 any day. Cheers.

Ok I've now had Batch 1 and Batch 2. I was at dramfest with a mate who had a bottle of batch #1 and said like me it was very good. We both tried Batch #2.....I think I almost saw him cry. It's gone way down hill. Night and day between the two batches.
@LeeEvolved @Reverend45 yeah, I bought a sample last year or year before ( I forget), while I was in London. That’s when it first came out, their batch 1. I thought it was amazing. But that was batch 1. I have a feeling batch 2 isn’t quite the same quality. Unfortunately the bottle I bought here is batch 2. Batch 1 was sold out literally within minutes, and none of it even made it here to the US
@Reverend45 - yeah, something is amiss here. @PBMichiganWolverine - gave it 5 stars about 10 months ago but he’s just now getting around to trying to get rid of the rest of the bottle? Hmm, methinks something may have changed with the seasons. Lol
@LeeEvolved yeah but @PBMichiganWolverine gave it a 5 star "best Glenfiddich so far" rating, so wouldn't that be 3 strikes and a homerun? As for the JarJar Note...somehow I have the feeling he would have a bit of a peaty smell.
@cascode - now we have to come up with a specific, off-putting smell and all agree to call it the “jar jar binks” note going forward...
@Telex - I am gonna get to try it because @PBMichiganWolverine is sending it as an extra in round 5 of our sample trading. See, even he wants to get rid of it! That’s 4 strikes- like when the batter swings at strike 3 and the catcher drops the ball. I still gotta jog to first before I get thrown out. I’d prefer to just throw my helmet and curse the home plate umpire before walking back to the dugout. Project XX is like a shitty catcher...
Ha! It's the faint hint of Jar-Jar on the nose that kills it :-P @LeeEvolved Aw, it's not *that* bad - besides it's not quite corrosive enough to clear the drains. When in doubt, mix it out.
I mean...it's a pretty bottle, so you could keep it just for the looks ;) It's by no means a bad whisky, just...mediocre. Kinda like the second Star Wars Trilogy.
Well, hell Lee... I’d try before I’d pour at least my friend. :).
I’ve got an unopened bottle so now I guess I gotta go and dump this one down the drain. 3 bad reviews are like baseball strikes to me. “YERRR OUT!”
This is kind of the shotgun approach to blending...take 20 barrels and blend them, hope the spread hits. It's not bad, but will never go the distance of a focused blend. Uninspiring is the right word I'd say. Curious what tomorrows sample will bring...Malt Master's Sherry Cask...doesn't have the best notes so far.
Agreed. I sampled this last year and found it uninspiring. Not bad, just uninspiring..
Yeah, I had some friends who reviewed this similarly and said there was a bit of a lack of focus. Thanks man. Cheers.
