In an effort to try and wash away my heartache after the Saints loss opened this bottle. Nose is alcohol, burnt brown sugar, more heat, slight spice. On palate, some dark fruit sweetness, oak (slightly bitter), spicy finish that is medium to long. The finish is more hot alcohol than Rye spice. Or, maybe a combination. Picks up some momentum as the glass dwindles. Overall, it’s okay for $27.00, but probably won’t buy again. Wouldn’t turn it down. Had higher hopes. I’ll stick with my Weller at this price point. Or, Four Roses small batch. I do like the 100 proof though.

@dubz480 great point. I bet they do
@PBMichiganWolverine amen. Couldn’t agree more.
@deuce26 I sort of view all these competitions as a way to sell more. I don’t believe there’s such a thing as Best Whisky...after all, our taste buds are all different . I might think one whiskey is the best while you’ll think another is...and we’d both be right. It’s not math. But marketing
@dubz480 yeah—you’re right. Now that it won, prices will go up and will be harder to find. I refuse to give in to the rush and buy mentality, which is what they’d want us to do
@deuce26 I have often wondered about that as well. I agree it's surprising that it won't best Whiskey, being a single barrel does Heaven Hill send a "Honey Barrel" to the competition? Either way if we thought it was getting harder to find I am sure it will be allocated now and go the way of Elmer T Lee (once upon a time that was readily available for $30!)
@deuce26 It seems it came down to this and BenRiach Temporis. This articles discusses selection process: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/fredminnick/2019/03/24/best-whiskey-how-bourbon-dominated-the-2019-san-francisco-world-spirits-competition/amp/
Okay who else besides me is surprised this took 2019 “Best in Show Whisky” at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition? I mean it’s okay and a good value (well not anymore probably) but what else could they have been possibly tasting for this to win?
@Generously_Paul you are exactly right. I’ll keep an open mind. I have experienced a bottle progress greatly. Hope that happens and I’ll update. And I hope the Lions can make a serious run before Stafford retires.
If you are basing your review off of your initial reaction to a newly opened bottle, I would suggest that you hold off your judgement. Taste it a few times and take brief notes each time. After you’re at least 1/3 of the way through the bottle you can form a more thought out opinion of what this whisky is really all about. That’s one drawback to drinking nothing but samples, you never get to see what oxidization does. Also, sorry about the Saints. At least they aren’t the Lions though
