Glen Grant 1973 40 Year (Samaroli)
Single Malt — Speyside, Scotland

What did you do in 1973? Watergate, oil crisis and the first cell phone call - four decades of history in a glass. Samaroli bottled this 40-year-old Glen Grant from sherry cask #6588 (180 bottles, 45% ABV). The nose is a true delight: fragrant notes of mocha, fermented fruits and old furniture intermingle with hints of cinnamon, laurels and polished wood. On the palate, complex spices, walnuts and juicy berries take over, and the oak influence is just perfect. Dark chocolate, oranges and caramel remain in the restrained but elegant finish. An adorable single malt!

@Slainte-Mhath Samaroli from this era are unicorns. Cheers mate, and happy Easter
Re-visited in 04/2019: Oh, sweet lord of liquids, I am back! In celebration of Easter Sunday, I poured myself a little dram of Glen Grant 40yo. Oxidation has not made it any worse, on the contrary! I hope my bottle will last for the next years to come, and I'm adding 1 more point for richness and complexity (92 pts).
Samaroli that should have been. Damn spell check!
I've heard Amarillo is a decent bottler. I'm looking forward to trying them one day. Not something I see around in NZ though
@PBMichiganWolverine Some malts show their age really well, such as older Glen Grant's, Strathisla's or Macallan's. I wouldn't say that they are 'better' than modern whiskies, but they are most certainly different. In case of this bottle, it doesn't really matter where it was distilled, as this Single Malt is 95% cask influence - and it's a good one!
@Slainte-Mhath great review. From a bygone age—-I suspect the quality must be totally different, for the better, than today’s stuff?
@Slainte-Mhath @ Jealousy is a terrible thing! :)
