I'm definitely not a tequila fan, the signature agave flavour doesn't really float my boat. However saying that I have had a handful I've enjoyed. Let's start off saying it's a good example of a great tequila. Rich, oily vanilla aqave, smokey toasted oak and more going on. Definitely wouldn't buy a bottle but if you like a drop of Mexico's finest this would be a good place to start. Solid 4.25 from me.....will have to try one of those Mezcals people are raving about next.

@Soba45 Your customs & excise sounds as ruinous as ours. The swines hit us with an $80/litre alcohol duty + an excise charge and then they tax us twice by charging GST on the original cost + the duty + the excise + the shipping cost! I've bought from MoM and Whisky Exchange a couple of times but you have to order just the right amount of certain things to make it worth while. 2 or 3 bottles of premium whisky when on special is worth it - the landed cost is about what you'd pay at a retail store, if they had it in stock. Also buying 30-40 samples is OK (which I guess is what you do). For anything standard it's just not worth it.
Ah ouch $49 to ship a bottle. I also sadly get hit $30 courier customs charge, $50 customs charge, $15% GST and $20 a bottle. So a $99 bottle would be more like $270 :-(. Bulk buying may help though :-).
Check out Nick’s Wine Merchants (a.k.a. Vintage Direct) in Victoria, Australia (nicks.com.au) they are experienced online sellers, have good prices and will ship to NZ. I buy about half of my booze from them. They are out of Del Maguey at the moment but last time I spoke to them they said there would be a shipment coming in by the end of April.
Yes sadly Master of Malt is where it's at but I've lined up a sample or two for the next order :-)
The only regret you will have from mezcal is that it might distract you from whisky. If you can find Del Maguey mezcal in NZ they are all good. Even the Vida, which is generally considered their most down-market product, stomps all over 95% of tequilas.
