My first rum. I bought a small $3.99 sample from Total Wine, just to experience rum. Not sure why I chose this, but I think that freaky looking octopus had something to do with it. I'm used to red wine and whisky, so not even sure how to score this...best not to then. Nose is like sweet tea. Taste is like sucking on a sugar cane. Very one dimensional...doesn't have the layers of complexity like red wine or whisky. Finish? No. Is this supposed to be mixed with something like soda? Just feels way too sweet on its own.

@geologyjack: you're right---I did want to give another shot at it... So I got today a Ron Diplomatica Reserva, which was ranked high here and really well priced at $26. I probably still won't mix it... Want to try it with just ice.
For me, the pleasure in drinking rum has been the experience - the people I'm with, the setting/ location, etc. I don't really enjoy it on its own, but it mixes very well.
Rough rum to start off with. Don't let that one ruin the lot for you.
In my opinion (and what do I know...so, I'd not add much weight to it)...I can't fathom mixing something that cost at least 4x to 5x as soda into soda. It's probably the logical finance guy in me that's questioning the value prop. That model works for low end spirits I guess, which would be unbearable on it's own.
I have a bottle of Kraken to mix with cola (for the wife). It's price betrays it's intended purpose. I'm afraid I'll never break into rum, tasted a few higher priced bottles over the years, never felt the need to go further. Also, rum's labeling terminology/statements are total bunk and the industry doesn't care... Except for Rhum Agricole...
