Sloe Gin & Variants — England

Just got back from one night business trip in Atlanta, and after a long day of meetings and presentations, I needed a drink. I saw this at the hotel bar, and was curious what's a "sloe gin". Apparently it's some berries steeped in gin. I don't know...maybe it's me...but tastes like a fruit Hi-C. Or Kool-aid. Way tooooo sweet. Not rating it, since I have no idea what's good or bad in sloe gin

My mother used to drink what she called a sloe gin fizz which was simply sloe gin and 7-up. I've seen a few cocktail recipes for it and even tried one, but it's just way too sweet.
Wondering if they put sugar in it? It tasted too sweet for just distilled sloe berries. (not that I've ever had sloe berries. Till two days ago, I had no idea even of their existence)
If I put a glass of Hi-C tropical punch side by side with this, I'd have a hard time telling which was which.
I believe my dad's answer to "what's bad in sloe gin" would have been "sloe gin." My introduction to the whole idea of sloe gin was him telling a story about how sickeningly sweet it was, and then him throwing up in the parking lot after drinking it. Kinda puts one off of trying the stuff, ya know?
Eh, just rate it based on your experience
