I need some advice:
I’m seeing a lot of chatter on the web these days about the newly branded Highland Park 12 Viking Honour and how it’s not the same quality level as the old Highland Park 12.
With the old Highland Park 12 now basically gone from the shelves forever, is there value in buying it (if found), then stashing it away until the demand for it could rise?

Good stuff @LeeEvolved. I decided to grab the bottle, and will likely just crack it open after I finish the HP 12 Viking Honour. Interesting side note: I did a color comparison and the Viking Honour is lighter than the older label 12 yo. Sort of curious, but prolly doesn’t mean anything.
@On_The_Moors - I don’t see much value in holding on to younger, aged statement whisky except for the value I would personally get for myself down the road. If there’s a certain brand and vintage you love more, like HP, I’d grab several bottles to stash away so that when it’s gone you can come back to it and be one of few that still have bottles to drink from. I’ve found that I really like the limited edition Macallan Classic Cut so I’ve bought 4 bottles already and will have them squirreled away so that when it’s gone I’ll still have some for the foreseeable future. I plan on buying a few more every time I see them (and while the price point is still $75-85). I’m not looking to flip them later. The only other good value I can see when buying for investment is if you can buy a complete series. I’m currently looking for the entire Laphroaig Cairdeas line and realize I’m going to have to pay higher prices to obtain the older vintages, but (hopefully) one day the full set may end up turning a nice profit if I choose to sell. I’m still buying those as though I’d like to eventually drink them so if my gamble doesn’t pay off I’ll still have something I look forward to enjoying. Can’t really lose. Thirdly, it’s not really the right time to buy as investments because the industry is booming. The distilleries themselves can charge top dollar so not many deals are going to be had anywhere. Buy what you like, in increased quantity if you can afford to, and just be happy is my take. I’ve spent a lot over the last 2 years and I’m not looking to flip anything and I’m fully prepared to start popping corks and enjoying them at any time. I have also found that there is a special feeling I get when I share the nicer bottles I have opened. There’s nothing quite like hearing that other people get to experience and enjoy something they otherwise would not have had the chance to. Plus, they’ll send you back some great things to taste as well. Well, I’ve rambled on long enough. Cheers.
Cheers, y’all. Very helpful perspectives.
Besides, I honestly think the hold and sell philosophy won’t work on this. Let’s face it...it’s no Karuizawa, Hanyu, Brora, or even OP21. I kind of think that just as stocks have P/E ratios, there’s some model that applies here too. So, a Brora’s P/E would be dismally too high ( in essence buying now isn’t worth it’s intrinsic equity). But maybe buying something like a Four Roses single barrels and EC Barrel proof would be like a mid-point P/E ( in essence you can’t wrong buying now). And a Henry McKenna BiB would be like a P/E below 10 ( great buy, prices will get higher as folks can’t afford the Four Roses single barrels and EC barrel proofs). Just one guy’s opinion...what do I know.
Personally I think the 12 year old has slipped a bit over the last few years. Once a 4 star dram, but not anymore for me, so I wouldn't be bothered hoarding it. I'll buy a bottle when the current one runs out and take my chances with what is available then. Now if we we talking about the 18 year old that would be a different scene entirely!
@On_The_Moors in my opinion, there’s some lines that are gone or will be gone, and it’s okay. Then there’s some that will be gone, and you want to buy now. Like Old Pulteney 17 and 21. Me, personally, I was never a fan of the HP12, and thought the 18 was eons better for a bit more. If I buy this, it wouldn’t be to “hold and drink”, but “hold and hopefully I’ll sell at a higher price”. ( I never subscribed to the hold and hopefully sell, because I’d see better returns in buying Pfizer stock paying 5% yield and a nice PE ratio)
Would love your insights on this @LeeEvolved @cascode @PBMichiganWolverine @Dreaming-of-Islay
