Aberlour 12 Year Double Cask Matured
Single Malt — Highlands, Scotland
Reviewed
April 30, 2018 (edited March 5, 2024)
This 12-year-old Speysider appears to be the tamed version of the excellent Aberlour A'bunadh, even though it is a vatting of both ex-bourbon and ex-sherry matured whisky. Fresh, citrusy and a little bit shy at first nosing, the aroma unfolds with tropical fruits, cloves and hints of marzipan. Despite its low ABV, the taste is surprisingly strong and fruity-spicy with lots of blueberries, plums and ginger. The finish is of medium length with notes of milk chocolate, baked apple and wood tannins. An easily accessible and quite affordable single malt with character.

I'm with you on the rating, after Abunadh this poor thing suffers like a plain sister to her older sibling at a coming out debutante ball in England in 1932. To enjoy this you really have to stay celibate, don't touch a Balvenie, Lavagulin, a Balblair 1990 2nd release or a Macallan Rare Cask. Just stay celibate for a day or two and the resulting intimate encounter will be very pleasant indeed. Sorry for the slightly non-PC analogy!
@cascode True! The only downside is that it's a bit hard to find. At least I cannot buy it here in Norway.
@Slainte-Mhath Seconded. An excellent expression - more going on, unchillfiltered and 48%. I actually prefer it to the A'bunadh.
Additional comment: If you see it available, opt for the non-chill filtered, 48% ABV version of Aberlour 12 yo!
@Slainte-Mhath - had this at a restaurant over the weekend. Thought it was very pleasant. I have drunk a couple of their bottles in the past.
